Our chapter offers financial assistance for the APR test.

  • The study books recommended by PRSA are now available at the Reference Desk (2nd floor) in the Columbia Public Library.
  • As always, a candidate's identity is confidential, and this chapter is very supportive of the process. We hold one of PRSA's highest APR-member ratios.

The chapter holds two Readiness Review Panels a year: one in May and one in November. To participate in the May session, apply for testing by April 1. For the November Readiness Review Panel, turn in your testing application by October 1.  

If you need more information, prsa.org has great resources that are easy to access. Our accreditation chair, Beth Hammock, APR, is available to answer questions.

NATIONAL BOARD LEADERS NEEDED 2009

Your 2008 National Nominating Committee has begun the arduous task of selecting national board leaders for 2009. We are excited to have fifteen positions available for board service. The officer and delegate at-large positions are one-year terms and the director positions are two-year terms.

One may be nominated by a member or can self nominate! Potential candidates are encouraged to participate in information teleconferences to learn more about board service from Jeff Julin, APR, 2008 Chair and CEO; Michael Cherenson, APR, 2009 Chair and CEO; William Murray, President and COO and our parliamentarian, Barry Glazer. In addition, any questions potential candidates may have about the state of PRSA and current initiatives can be answered on these calls. The calls are scheduled for Tuesday, April 8 and Tuesday, May 13. Click for more information.

Names of potential candidates should be sent to Donna Jonas, 33 Maiden Lane, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038-5150 or by e-mail to nomcomm@prsa.org. Information packets that outline the specifics of the nominating process will be sent to those individuals.

The candidate application, along with process timetable and other nominating materials are available online.

The deadline for receiving completed candidate materials is 5:00 p.m. (in the time zone in which the candidate resides) on Monday, June 9, 2008 — no exceptions.

The available national positions are:

  • Chair and CEO-elect
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Director, Midwest District
  • Director-at-Large
  • Two Assembly delegates-at-large (two positions are open)
  • Two International delegates-at-large (two positions are open)

Eligible candidates are accredited, PRSA members in good standing who have served in at least one of the following capacities:

  • Voting delegate in at least one national PRSA Assembly
  • Chapter president
  • Section chair
  • District chair, or
  • Chair of a national committee

Director of Community Relations (posted 5/9/2008)

University of Iowa Health Care seeks a creative, strategic and collaborative Director of Community Relations to manage outreach and engagement initiatives in support of positioning strategies and community partnership initiatives. As the states premier academic medical center, University of Iowa Health Care unites the UI Carver College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics and UI Physicians to provide high quality, patient-centered care, conducts groundbreaking biomedical research, and educates the scientists and health care providers of the future.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for External Relations, the Director of Community Relations will provide leadership in the promotion of collaborative relationships with the public at-large and communities statewide to build a healthier community and region; be responsible for the direction of a comprehensive community relations program; work with community, business and non-profit leaders to develop and manage high visibility programs based on UI Health Care’s objectives and areas of focus; and be a accountable to the Associate Vice President and CEO of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a public service agent on behalf of the clinical enterprise.

The preferred candidate will have extensive (5-7 years) experience in managing community relations, public relations and/or outreach engagement strategies in an academic, health care, non-profit or business setting, and have the ability to foster collaborative partnerships in support of UI Health Care’s objectives and in service to community needs.  Such stature will be evidenced by a track record in development, management and evaluation of diverse strategies and programs consistent with organizational goals.

Communications Director - (posted 4/28/2008)

The Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) is searching for a leader to manage its multi-faceted communications and public information activities designed to provide vital human service information to Missourians.   This position reports to the Department Director and consults with members of the Executive Team on public information issues.  Responsibilities include: developing a strategic communications plan to support the department’s mission, goals and objectives; identifying opportunities to support organizational initiatives and developing communications materials and programs to promote and publicize these activities internally and externally; responding to media inquiries for information and facilitating media interviews with spokespersons and others; and building and fostering working relationships with the press, members of the community, public affairs offices and other organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Desired qualifications include a bachelor’s or advanced degree with specialization in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism and five years of professional experience in media relations which include comprehensive knowledge of public information with a large organization.   Successful candidates will have the ability to: plan, organize, and conduct a formal needs assessment and analyze and report the information and results; develop and update a comprehensive communications plan based on identified needs and agency priorities; manage and supervise staff; design and deliver presentations; write and edit news releases and informational materials; direct and coordinate communication activities for all major initiatives of DSS; and work with staff at all levels. State government experience is preferred.

COMPENSATION
Salary will be commensurate with expertise and experience within a $45,000 to $78,000 range.  Missouri State government offers an attractive benefit package including flexible health coverage plans, personalized savings and tax deferral options, and a state-sponsored retirement plan.

A new resource is available for employers to post PR entry-level or internship openings that will be seen by prospective candidates from around the country. The Web site, www.entrylevelpr.com, is managed by students from the University of Missouri but is used by both employers and students nationwide. There is no charge to list entry-level positions (0-2 years experience) or internships (paid, unpaid and for-credit) on the site. Listings will be posted for one month.
